Tangrams

We have been learning about tangrams in our class.  tangrams are different sized shapes that fit together to make a picture of anything.  First you make sure you can make a square using all of your shapes.  In tangrams you have to use all your shapes in every tangram you make.  This is a great website that shows you how to cut out and form shapes for your tangrams. You can find some really cool tangrams that you can make simply.  If you find it too hard you can click solution and it will tell you how to do it.

We watched the Japanese animated film 'Laughing Moon' which is all made from tangrams.  It was really funny.

RM 17 manga

We were learning about Manga which is the japanese style of comic book drawings. Manga is different to most of our traditional drawings because the hair styles mostly used on Manga drawings is made up of big, thick clumps of hair and the eyes on Manga drawings are much bigger than most of our drawings but other facial features such as nose and mouth are very small compared to the eyes!
In class we are watching a Manga film called Howls Moving Castle. It has a great plot so we are always eager to watch on! It is about a wizard named Howl who has a walking castle. There is a girl named Sophie, who works in a hat shop and gets turned into an old aged pensioner by the Wicked Witch of the Waste! Will Sophie ever lift the curse?

Japanese Art Work.

On Friday 4th November our class made a carp streamer each. Carp Streamers are used to represent when a baby is born, and they are put up all over Japan on Childrens Day!
We also tried out some Japanese block prints of  the great wave. Block prints were invented by a Japanese artist called Hokusai. Block prints are very easy and quick to make and that meant from then on it was much easier to aford paintings to display around your house and local places.
We are aiming to make 1000 paper cranes, so our class are trying to make 500 paper cranes so the other P6 class can make another 500, and then we'll reach... 1000!

Kimono Dress Up

2 weeks ago we got kimonos + happy jackets sent to us from the Japanese Embassy in London. We have started wearing them and they are comfortable and cool! Our teacher Mr M wore one and it was really funny+ awesome! It's hard to tie the kimonos but they colourful. You can get men and women kimonos. Happi jackets are a bit like normal short jackets but they are colourful +  have patterns on them.
